Fungal nail infections are easily transferable between people, yet they can also develop on their own¹. They tend to affect the toenails more than fingernails, which is likely due to the damp and warm conditions created when wearing socks and shoes. Fungal nail infection treatment is generally fairly simple, however by knowing what causes an infection in the first place you can take precautions to avoid it or stop it before it becomes a problem.

Age

Although fungal nail infections can occur in people of any age, they are more prevalent in those over the age of 60. With age, nails can become dry and brittle, which can result in cracks in the nail that can lead to a fungal infection².

Health status

Your overall health can also play a part in how likely you are to contract a fungal infection¹. A weakened immune system can mean that fungal conditions are more easily contracted¹. It has also been shown that poor blood circulation in the toes and feet may also be contributing factors¹.

Fungal Nail Infections; Attention to hygiene

Feet and toes should be thoroughly cleaned daily, ideally with a soap-free cleanser such as QV Gentle Wash. Without proper attention to hygiene, you may be creating an environment ideal for fungal growth. Fungal infections thrive in warm, damp and non-sterile environments, so cleaning your feet daily can help to prevent this.

It can be one, or a combination of these factors that could lead to a fungal nail infection. We suggest wearing breathable shoes and socks to inhibit the chances of fungal conditions from developing.
