Tips for preventing jock itch during sports season

The term ‘Jock Itch’ comes from the locker rooms of American sporting teams, as many athletes and football players are affected by fungal infections due to excessive sweating. As football players are sweating for long periods of time without changing or cleaning the skin, the moist, non-sterile and warm environment of their skin is ideal for fungal growth. Jock Itch is more common in males, however the condition can equally affect females1. This is likely due to the style of uniforms and the rates of males compared to females that play sports such as football.

So, during the long football season, what can athletes do to minimise the risk of contracting a fungal infection such as Jock Itch? It’s pretty much impossible to change out of dirty or sweaty clothes while competing, so we advise that immediately after you get off the field you use a cleansing wash that is soap-free such as QV Gentle Wash. Keeping the skin clean will help to ensure that the skin environment does not encourage fungal growth.

Jock Itch is a common condition and there are many products available for treatment. A Jock Itch cream can assist to alleviate irritation, fight fungal infection and the moisturisers present can help the skin’s barrier function, which encourages an environment amenable to healing. For a water-resistant and moisturising product we suggest trying Resolve Jock-Itch Cream. It is a great all-round treatment product that is suitable even for sensitive skin types.

If you are concerned about the health of your skin and need advice, we suggest seeking the advice of your healthcare professional.

Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional.
